Task 1: Salmon Smart Mini-Grants

Projects for installation include permeable pavers, grass mesh, flow through planters, storm water trees, swales and rain barrels. The project's capacity of up to $1,500 anticipates contributions from the owner ($500), city ($500) and DEC ($500). Tanana Valley Watershed Association will process applications from homeowners and business owners for a small scale initiative targeted toward Fairbanks-area residents. TVWA will award the mini-grants which will reimbursed up to $1000 for constructing a green infrastructure application on their property.

TASK 2: Erosion Protection

The final phase of Carlson Center drainage improvement will construct connection from the raingarden the adjacent swale via a culvert under the pathway. This project is the final phase of a multifaceted approach to treating storm water runoff from the large parking lot. Runoff drains first into the raingarden, then the swale, and finally to the river. The raingarden location was causing erosion due to a broken culvert which was repaired (filled) and a new culvert is necessary to connect the garden to a swale on the other side of a pedestrian walkway to drain to the Chena River.

TASK 3: Green Streets Project Enhancement

Annually FAST Planning (formerly FMATS) awards projects for road and pedestrian improvements based on their federal funding priorities. FAST’s Green Streets Policy indicates that they will identify and prioritize streets that are in greatest need of green infrastructure for the management of storm water runoff, including specific design recommendations for each of those streets. TVWA will work with the awarded contractors for enhancing one or more GI projects scheduled for construction 2019 – 2020.

TASK 4: Green Ways: Roads to Parks for Fairbanks

Fairbanks Area Surface Transportation (FAST) Planning, formerly FMATS, is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the urbanized area of the Fairbanks. This public outreach campaign to engage the community on an opportunity to convert an under-utilized road in downtown, Lacey Street, from a road to a park. Leveraging Lacey Street’s site recommendations from FAST’s Green Streets Plan, this project will evaluate the viability of converting gray to green.

TASK 5: Storm Smart Schools educational area

Design and construct an outdoor educational area at the Georgeson Botanical Garden. The area will be built to serve as a resource and example for local schools interested in implementing “Storm Smart School” projects to integrate green infrastructure for storm water management on school grounds and to increase environmental literacy.
